Hope Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune—without the words, And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I’ve heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me. — Emily Dickinson

Hope

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune—without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Great News From California. State Senate Passes the Gun Safety ‘Life Act’

SACRAMENTO — A package of some of the most restrictive gun control measures in the nation advanced in the state Senate on Tuesday after tearful testimony from victims of firearms violence and opposition from gun-owner groups including the National Rifle Assn.

After a nine-hour hearing that saw support from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Senate Public Safety Committee approved seven bills that are part of a package of measures dubbed by Democratic leaders as the “Life Act.” The bills still need to be approved by the full Senate and Assembly.

I can’t even begin to express how this affects me. From Afghanistan, where people are being blown up everyday, to extend a hand, hope, solidarity.

This is Martin Richard, the 8 year old boy who died yesterday while waiting at the finish line to hug and congratulate his father on a successful Boston marathon completion.
I weep for him. I weep for others like him. I weep for us.
But my sadness makes me even more determined to work for peace, because I know there are more of us than them. There’s more of people like Carlos Arredondo.
Good exists. It exists in people all over the world. It’s just as powerful a force, but it works silently.

“Last night the side of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Peter Jay Sharp building became a canvas, displaying messages of support for Boston. The messages projected read: “Peace and Love,” “It shouldn’t take a tragedy for us to come together,” “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that” (a Martin Luther King, Jr. quote), and NY ♥ B (in the Red Sox font).
These were created by NYC Light Brigade and The Illuminator (“a political art project that emerged out of Occupy Wall Street”) who use light projections to display their messages. As of right now (12:10 a.m.) they are still airing the stream from outside of BAM on Lafayette.”

Heartfelt thanks to the first responders at today’s tragedy in Boston, and all other tragedies. They are whom we turn to in times of need, but whom we neglect when things are going well.

I am glad my tax dollars go to support them.

Thoughts and prayers to Boston. Be safe and be strong.

And before we know any details, best not to speculate about who did this.

Update: Boston Police is asking people not to go out and donate blood today. Urging people to stay indoors.
